The best thing that a Smith&Wesson enthusiast can invest in. Serial numbers starting with BPE were produced around November.A Guide to Smith & Wesson.38 Special. Done except Smith & Wessons revolver model numbers have all been. The serial number and model numbers are but i am.2006-11-12  smith and wesson 586 serial numbers. Your Model 686-3 Distinguished Combat Magnum Stainless was probably manufactured in early 1990, serial numbers in the BFNxxxx range shipped in March of that year. IndyGTO: My pleasure. A couple more things, the grips are sarial numbered to the gun as they were ground while fitted to the frame to be a perfect fit.

From the looks of the picture, you have a 686 'pre-lock', meaning it does not have the built in lock that is used to prevent usage of the gun. Smith 686's, especially the pre-lock models, hold their value very well. It also appears to be a 6 inch barrel, which is probably the most desired barrel length, with 3 inch, 2inch, and 4 inch following. The most important thing in the value of the gun will be if it has proper lock up and timing of the cylinder. Then check the crane to see that it fits tight to the frame. Hollywood likes to show people 'Cowboying' the crane by releasing the cylinder and crane, then flipping the cylinder back into the frame. (Not good for the fit).
I own a Smith 686 7 shot 7 inch barrel, and I love it. Many people think the Smith 686, as well as other Smith models are good investments. You say that someone is wanting to trade for a Smith you own, if I understand what you said. It would be impossible to make that judgement without knowing what you have, and then everyone on this Board would have a different opinion.
The 686 'no dash' means that it was an early Model 686, (the 686 was designed in 1980). As improvements, changes, and (ahem) locks were added, Smith added 686 '-' dashes to designate the changes.
